Slingo Space Invaders slot review

Remember this 1978 classic? Gaming Realms rebuilt it as a Slingo.

Team Betty • 5 mins read •

Slingo Space Invaders welds the classic arcade cabinet onto a 5×5 bingo grid, runs low volatility, and tops out at 750x your stake. The bonus round here looks like an actual arcade sequence; blast the aliens and you get paid.

Gameplay

A single row of five symbols spins beneath a 5×5 grid of numbers. Land a number that’s on the grid and it marks off. Fill a full row, column or diagonal and that’s a Slingo. There are 12 lines to complete and 12 spins to do it in.

Four Slingos puts you on the paid section of the prize ladder, and each one after that moves you up a rung. A full house pays the top prize.

The grid can move fast with the special symbols. A Wild marks off any number in the column it lands in. A Super Wild marks any number anywhere on the grid, which is the difference between one Slingo and three.

Gold UFOs drop cash and multipliers straight into your total, up to 5x the stake. Red UFOs don’t pay anything now — they bank extra lives for later.

Hit four Slingos and the bonus opens. The screen becomes like the arcade game: there’s a cannon at the bottom, invaders marching down, and cash attached to the ones that are hit.

Editor’s note: There’s no gameplay input from your end in the bonus round, which feels like a missed opportunity. I spent the first couple bonus rounds trying to figure out how I could shoot before realizing there’s nothing to do.

Never played Slingo? Here’s how it works

Forget reels and paylines, essentially. You’re filling in a bingo card with numbers from a slot machine. The five numbers that spin up each turn get crossed off automatically if matched. Your job is completing lines, not matching symbols.

Progress is visible and cumulative, meaning you can see exactly how close the next Slingo is and what numbers you need.

The RTP and volatility of Slingo Space Invaders

The RTP is 94.02%, which is on the lower end of average. Low volatility softens the shape of it. You’ll likely see small returns often, like a couple of Slingos or a gold UFO here and there, rather than long droughts.

Betting near the $0.10 end stretches your session out and gets you more cracks at the bonus, which is where the 750x lives.

Are the Extra Spins at the end worth buying?

Sometimes, and the number of Slingos on your grid could tell you which. If you have three Slingos with a Super Wild’s worth of gaps left, an extra spin might be worth it — one more line could get you onto the paid ladder and into the bonus.

If you’ve got one Slingo with the grid barely touched, you’re paying for a position you’re probably nowhere near.

The price climbs with each purchase, so the fifth extra spin costs far more than the first. Set a rule before you start for how much you’re willing to bet. That keeps the feature working as a decision instead of a reflex.

Final verdict

Gaming Realms treated the source material properly. The pixel art, the marching aliens and the cannon at the bottom of the screen all show care for the 1978 original.

The math isn’t great compared to other titles, with a 94.02% RTP and 750x ceiling, but players who enjoy low volatility slots will have fun here.

If you grew up feeding quarters into arcade cabinets and want a version that pays, this delivers exactly that. If you’re picking games on return and win potential, the numbers point somewhere else.
